Cell phone cameras are here to stay....

Several times this week, I found myself looking at a great image--but not having one of my DSLRs nearby. So, I did what is increasingly becoming common--I used my cell phone camera. The results have been surprising, as can be seen from the image below (full disclosure--I did touch it up a bit and crop it using Photoshop). The quality has certainly gotten better over the years. The cell phone actually takes a darn good picture--unless you want to blow it up to larger than a 6 by 4 (which one of my colleagues at work requested, but I had to decline after an explanation). Still, if one has to choose between not taking the image and using a cell phone and getting the shot, I say use the cell phone. It will not be too long before the sensor in my phone will be larger than the one in my DSLR. Indeed, it was not too many years ago that the best digital camera you could buy had fewer megapixels than my phone does now. Indeed, my Iphone 5 has an 8 megapixel sensor made by Sony--larger than the 6.1 megapixel sensor in the first Nikon I used, which was a d50. Still, the old photographer's adage about always having one's camera with one is certainly as true today as it ever was. Now, increasingly, however, for many people, including me, that camera is a cell phone.
