It is obvious that I have a particular affinity for sunsets and sunrises.  You may wonder if there is a trick or technique to getting a good image.  A few things are obvious and essential.  First, you need a good vantage point.  My preferred place is over water, so as to catch the reflection. A lake, a river or any body of water can be a good setting, especially if there is something else to frame the image, like a building or a boat.  Also, I have found that, technically speaking, you need to do at least three things:  you should shoot in RAW, use a tripod or monopod (and a remote triggering device), and you should underexpose a bit.  I would not suggest putting the ISO up too high--that will lead to a grainy image. You should also avoid shooting directly in the sun unless you underexpose significantly. Another trick is to wait until the sun is completely down for a sunset or for a sunrise, just before the sun hits the horizon.  That is often when the colors are at their most intense. Finally, keep in mind that you have to work relatively quickly--the sun is always moving and the colors are constantly changing.  It is not like shooting a sporting event, obviously, but you can not be a laggard.  Speaking of laggards, also remember that sometime you have to get up very early or stay up kinda late, and often it is really cold. You also have to be lucky, as in much of photography, being at the right place at the right time.  But if things turn out just right, you may get a few images you really love,  Good luck!!
